Mid winter break created a host of opportunities for Marian’s young JV racers. The Mustang’s had seven athletes on mission trips or vacation and a group of freshman stepped in to fill the gaps and get valuable future experiences. Freshman Cera Mtlotkowski, Brynn Fullerton, Emily Day, and Bleu Borromeo joined sophomore Lauren Dee, junior Kenzi Lewis and senior captain Olivia Weymouth at Pine Knob to compete in the SEMSL Championships.
The morning SL races saw Olivia Weymouth start well with the first run lead. The second run she had a few small issues which compounded into taking second in the run for second in team scoring. Lauren Dee in her third varsity start showed the positive direction she is headed with a strong 24th. Cera Mtlotkowski skied well under the pressure to take 50th. Bleu Borromeo skied cleanly to garner 55th and joining Cera as first time scoring athletes. Kenzi Lewis was close behind in 56th only 0.30 seconds back of her teammate. Emily Day followed in 58th place with two consistent finishes.
The GS didn’t start as well for the Mustangs overall. Kenzi Lewis had a nice first run backed by a solid second run for 54th. Olivia Weymouth had a first run moment when she got her hand inside the panel at the top of the delay and it pulled her upper body around and took her off line. Olivia recovered to be the top scoring GS team athlete with 1-1 team runs and the only female athlete to drop into the 16 second range in the second run. Lauren Dee had a big fall that resulted in an unusual DNF for her in the first run. The three freshman were highlights for the team in GS. All three brought scoring finishes with Cera Mtlotkowski in 50th place just like her SL result, Brynn Fullerton finishing closely in 51st and Bleu Borromeo only 0.9 seconds back in 53rd.
The Mustang’s will field a similar run order today in the Catholic League Championships at Alpine Valley. The Mustang’s will have sophomore varsity skier Ainslie Vanneste returning for tonight’s racing.
